Road closures don’t add up to safer cycling

As cyclist, what really grinds my gears about these road closures is how the likes of Cllr Jon Burke think they are doing a great job of converting Hackney into Amsterdam. These barriers are a cheap trick, avoiding the expense of installing dedicated cycle lanes.
The mentality is that, if you make the roads unusable for cars then people will happily convert to cycling.
The Dutch invested in the construction of 22,000 miles of dedicated cycle lanes, servicing a population a quarter of that of Britain (UK has just 5,000 miles of dedicated cycle lanes). They didn’t just block off a bunch of roads overnight, ruining infrastructure and then think to themselves “what a great job we’ve done”.
These road closures don’t add up to safe, viable cycling routes. Many of the shared-space routes are already becoming dangerous with regular incidents of cyclists hitting children; a sudden increase will certainly make it worse (shared spaces are not genuine cycle commuting routes because in most cases cyclists must ride walking pace by law).
Whilst the main roads, which are where most cycling fatalities occur (according to the London Collision Map) have been made more dangerous by the sudden increased influx of frustrated drivers.
Not only that, the roads that have been blocked don’t form a cohesive commuting routes, so cyclists are not likely to frequent them anyhow. Neither are most the closures located on market streets where businesses will benefit from increased footfall.
Meanwhile Cllr Burke seems in denial that these closures are causing gridlock. Who’s he kidding – if you dam the tributaries of a river the levels on the main course are always going to get higher. He then uses congestion in neighbouring boroughs who have no closures, as a denial that his are causing congestion in Hackney. Naturally, the Hackney gridlock will effect surround areas as drivers reroute along parallel arterials to avoid the Hackney bottleneck and worsening other boroughs’ own traffic issues.
The smug arrogance of the man does nothing to make the issue better or make him excusable for his terrible city planning.
